First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Uncommon edition. Hardcover in Very Good condition, 12mo. Tan cloth with silver-stamped title and decoration on front board, spine titles in silver, top edge silver, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed, frontis portrait w/tissue. Light wear and soiling, spotting to back board. Inscribed on front end-paper, "Mrs. Alvah Lawrie / With the compliments of / F.M.G." Bookseller accession no.: 17202. Author Keyes Danforth, b.1822 in Williamstown, was judge of the local court, Treasurer of Williams College, town treasurer and selectman, assessor, and member of the legislature. The above inscription was probably by Frank M. Gazlay, a printer with the Gazlay Brothers firm (but apparently not a partner); Mrs. Alvah Lawrie was the wife of the president of ALCOA aluminum company; they were married 1911 (she 30 yrs. his junior) and the following year Alvah Lawrie bought the Danforth farm; this book was possibly a gift from the printer to the Lawrie's (16 years after it was published) following their purchase of the Danforth farm.
