Two sets of page proofs for the Sickles article (pp. [257]-271 in both settings): one set on five sheets, 23 ¼ x 6 ¼ inches, each sheet cut in half (with a little loss to one line from the cuts on each), with one annotation ("March, 1891," the publication date on the first sheet); the second with smaller portions cut and mounted to 14 thicker sheets of paper, tied in the upper left corner, four of the sheets with eight of Sickles's ink manuscript corrections or comments (two initialed "D.E.S."), another with a pencil note on a mounted sheet (5 x 5 3/8 inches). The Sickles contribution was one of four that appeared together in theReview(No. CCCCXII, March, 1891); Some storage soiling and browning to each set, glue staining to the mounted pieces of the second set. Still good copies of a work in progress. By Sickles's accounting, the key to victory at Gettysburg were the unforseen circumstances that resulted in Meade and his Union army falling into positions at Gettysburg that had been chosen by Lee for his army (those circumstances involved a series of encounters on the first day, Sickles's move from Emmitsburg to Gettysburg against orders, and Stuart's absence, among others), strong defensive positions forcing the opponent to attack. His analytical descriptions of the movements on the second day detail the effective work of corps and division commanders using initiative and instinct to position troops for what was ultimately a military victory (making the third day a sad climax for the Confederates) in spite of strategic intentions that went unfulfilled because circumstances demanded innovation. Several long manuscript annotations refer to later writings from Confederate officers that confirm Sickles's opinions. Longstreet's tardiness on the morning of the second day, the southern excuse for defeat prevalent at the time of this publication, was not mentioned by Sickles.
