Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Limited Edition. "Under a Fool's Cap" by Daniel Henry Holmes, Jr. is a book of delightful poetry published by Thomas B. Mosher in Portland Maine. This is the Second Edition, issued in 1911 in a Limited Edition of 900 copies. The book, printed by Mosher on Van Gelder hand-made paper, remains, as with each of Mosher''s productions, a gem of the printing art. This copy was bound in mauve colored, paper-covered boards, and features a decorated title label on the front board. The spine is also graced with a paper label. The title page is rubricated, and features Mosher's device, also printed in red. This was Holmes' first book of poetry. This copy has seen a bit of wear, which displays mainly on the spine and the spine's joints. Please read our full condition report, provided below. TITLE : Under a Fool's Cap. AUTHOR : Daniel Henry Holmes (Daniel Henry Holmes, Jr., 1858 - 1901) IMPRINT : Thomas B. Mosher. PLACE : Portland, Maine. DATE : 1911. EDITION : Second Edition SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Print run limited to 900 copies, the type being then distributed. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Small hardcover; contains a Bibliographical Note; has a rubricated title page; 99 pages; 4 3/4" x 7"; mauve paper-covered boards with tile labels on spine and front board, both printed red on buff; the text-block edges are rough-trimmed. Mauve end-papers CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS -- This is a previously owned book which has seen use, and displays that use moderately, the following imperfections and particulars noted; EXTERIOR - The spine extremities are compressed and display chipping and small loss (the foot is crimped); there is evidence of neatly effected mending to the head of the front joint - where the joint had obviously suffered a bit of splitting. There is a small damp stain to the foot of the spine; there are also a couple of other damp stains to the spine, these being considerably vaguer in delineation. On the front board is a narrow, rectangular shadow or impression which seems to be the residue of a label or sticker (why or for what purpose I do not know, but it is visible, and one can just discern it in the pictures provided). The top edge of the text-block is somewhat darkened, else edges are clean. BINDING - The aforementioned mend to the joints, else the binding is nice and tight, although it is obvious that the book has been read. No leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR - Other than a neatly penciled note from a previous dealer, the book is unmarked, and free of writing or marginalia; there are no signatures.

Softcover. brown & tan illustrated wraps w/ white printing. book x, 346 pgs. In this rich collection of Sanskrit verse, the late Daniel Ingalls provides English readers with a wide variety of poetry from the vast anthology of an eleventh-century Buddhist scholar. Although the style of poetry presented here originated in royal courts, Ingalls shows how it was adapted to all aspects of life, and came to address issues as diverse as love, sex, heroes, nature, and peace. More than thirty years after its original publication, Sanskrit Poetry continues to be the main resource for all interested in this multifaceted and elegant tradition.-Amazon. In 1852 his father bought a summer home near Covington, Kentucky which they called Holmesdale. The young Holmes spent his summers in Kentucky and his winters in New Orleans. As a young man Holmes moved to Holmesdale and took up the practice of law, in what William S. Ward called, "a desultory fashion." As a poet he took "old tags of nursery rhymes and fashioned out of them some of the tenderest lyrics ever written" - Mosher. Bishop 422.2 PRESS/W39 Language: eng.
