Under Milk Wood was first broadcast by the BBC on 25 January 1954. The film of the play opened the Venice Festival in 1971, released in 1972 with screenplay by Andrew Sinclair and starring Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole.

Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of Rees' fabulous retro jacket and spine, corners very slightly rubbed, not price clipped (10s 6d), previous owner's bookplate and inscription to ffep, very slight lean, internally clean and tight, overall a vg++ copy, in bright unsunned jacket reminiscent in style to John Craxton and John Minton, by Welsh artist Brian Rees (b.1930).101pp. Commissioned by the BBC, and described by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914-53), as 'a play for voices' UNDER MILK WOOD takes the form of an emotive and hilarious account of a spring day in the fictional Welsh seaside village of Llareggub. We learn of the inhabitants' dreams and desires, their loves and regrets. The play introduces us to characters such as Captain Cat who dreams of his drowned former seafellows and Nogood Boyo who dreams of nothing at all. It is a unique and touching depiction of a village that has 'fallen head over bells in love'. The First Voice narration reveals the ordinary world of daily happenings and events, while the Second Voice conveys the intimate, innermost thoughts of the fascinating folk of Llareggub. There have been many productions of UNDER MILK WOOD over the years and Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, Elizabeth Taylor, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Tom Jones have all starred in radio, stage or film adaptations. Set over a 24-hour pub crawl, Thomas evokes an unconventional narrative amongst his character's inner dialogues and dreams. Commissioned by the BBC and first performed in May 1953, Thomas himself read several roles just months before his death. It has since been performed many times, most notably by Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones.
