Brossura. Condition: nuovo. 19pp. Estratto da "ORIENTALIA CHRISTIANA PERIODICA 86 (2020)", fasc. I-II --- This study examines Aphrahat's Demonstrations regarding the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian from his Semitic and un-Hellenized point of view. This study shows that lay people were members of the church and 'saved' just as the bnay qyama, the ascetic elite. This is supported by the Liber Graduum which also recognizes the Upright and the Perfect as members of the Church and saved. Thus, though Aphrahat focuses more on the bnay qyama than the lay people, as the Liber Graduum focuses more on the Perfect than the Upright, Aphrahat's discussions of the Holy Spirit also apply not just to the spiritual elite, the bnay qyama, but more generally to all Christians. The earliest orthodox Syriac writer, Aphrahat writes things that may seem strange to western ears. For instance, he refers to the spirit figuratively as 'mother'. Although he wrote from Persia in the mid fourth century, his writings reflect a more primitive period in Christian doctrine and practice than western writers. However, his profuse use of Scripture and scriptural imagery make him familiar and relevant today.
Brossura. Condition: nuovo. 16pp. ORIENTALIA CHRISTIANA PERIODICA 87. Orientalia Christiana, (2021), fasc. I-II --- On the Star that Appeared to the Magi, by Jacob of Serug (d. 521), is the most extensive work on the Star and the Magi in Syriac patristic literature. The Star was the universal, cosmological 'bait' that lured the Magi through their knowledge of the stars, the zodiac, and calculations of horoscopes. Thus, they became convinced of the Star's validity regarding the King in Judah. As they were drawn to Judah, the gentile Magi became the first preachers and international missionaries for Christ. Jacob depicts how the Magi from Persia preached at every milepost and parasang on the way to and the way from Judah. Jacob also shows that the Magi's offerings to Christ represented gifts from every country since Persia had grown from their gifts to magianism. This article examines the Star, the Magi's religion and astrology and discusses important terms and themes and provides parallel support from Ephrem and Narsai. It analyzes Jacob's dramatic presentation of the Magi as Christ's first heralds to the gentiles and the Jews and how they are examples for all believers since their time.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - On the Entrance of Our Lord into Sheol tells with great power the invincibility of Sheol and how Christ gave His life to enter into Sheol like any other dead human so that He might conquer it. With matchless imagery Jacob impresses on the reader how Death and Sheol dominated mankind and the utter helplessness of the Sheol-bound human race. He tells of the necessity of Christ's death that allowed Him to enter Sheol the only way possible - as any other dead human. Christ's power over life allowed Him to trick and destroy Sheol and Death and liberate the dead. This homily displays Jacob of Serugh's masterful rhetorical skill with the 12-syllable line. The translation is based on the critical text of Akhrass and Syryany, and it contains an introduction and indices. The extensive footnotes to the translation explain the Syriac text to assist the reader interested in translating the Syriac and understanding the homily.
