De retour du Japon, en 1954, auréolé d un 4e dan, Yves Klein, que nous connaissons surtout comme le père du bleu éponyme et le héraut visionnaire de l immatériel, entreprend ainsi de publier, avec l aide du maître Igor Correa, un traité sur les 6 Katas du judo, les « fondements ». L un des artistes majeurs du XXe siècle était donc, également, un grand judoka. Pendant l'été 1952, Yves Klein prend des contacts au Japon et s'embarque pour Yokohama où il arrive le 23 septembre. Peu après, il s'installe à Tokyo et s'inscrit à l'Institut Kôdôkan, le plus prestigieux centre de judo. Il vit au Japon durant quinze mois, partageant son temps entre l'Institut et les leçons de français qu'il donne à des étudiants américains et japonais. Durant ce séjour, il prépare un livre sur le judo dans le but d'importer en Europe l'esprit et la technique des Katas japonais. Peu avant son retour, il obtient le 4e dan de judo et accède ainsi au meilleur niveau européen. De retour à Paris en 1954, il publie Les Fondements du Judo aux Éditions Grasset. Ce traité de judo est illustré de photographies montrant Yves Klein réalisant des Katas en compagnie d'autres judokas dont Igor Correa.
