Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a fascinating glimpse into the historic 1851 visit of Boston city officials to the Canadian cities of Toronto, Kingston, Montreal, and others. The author provides a detailed and lively account of the delegation's mission to promote trade and strengthen social ties between the United States and Canada. Beyond the historical narrative, the book offers insights into the political, economic, and social dynamics of the time. It explores the impact of new transportation and communication technologies, such as railways and telegraphs, on cross-border relations. The author also examines the contrasting approaches to immigration and the role of the Catholic Church in both the United States and Canada. Through vivid descriptions of meetings with local officials, business leaders, and ordinary citizens, the book captures the complex and often conflicting attitudes towards each other held by Americans and Canadians at this pivotal moment in history. It also highlights the shared desire for cooperation and mutual benefit that ultimately prevailed. This book stands as a valuable contribution to our understanding of the historical foundations of the enduring relationship between the United States and Canada. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Illustrated Edition. This is a nice condition copy of "American Historical Prints - Early Views of American Cities, etc." From the Phelps Stokes and Other Collections by I.N. Phelps Stokes and Daniel C. Haskell with provenance (see below). 1933; The New York Public Library; New York. The book is profusely illustrated with maps, plans, and views throughout. The chapters are as follows: Introduction; List of Towns and Cities; Explanatory Notes and Key; Catalogue - Views Outside of the United States, Addenda; Historical Notes; Index of Artists, Engravers, etc.; Index of Subjects. PROVENANCE: This copy contains a typed letter from paper manufacturer "Tileston & Hollingsworth Co." as follows: "Dear V - I think you may find this book quite interesting. The T & H Company made the paper for the text but not, I am glad to say, for the illustrations." Affixed to the front pastedown is the Ex Libris label of Valentine Hollingsworth, who became President of the company in 1921. From the Introduction: "Many attempts have been made to present the history of the United States pictorially, and innumerable illustrated books have been published dealing with every section and nearly every important city of our country. Nevertheless, until recently there had been no serious attempt to gather under one roof, or within the compass of a single volume, a comprehensive and balanced collection of maps, plans, and views - or reproductions of them - which, collectively, by their chronological arrangement, Geographical grouping, and description, should convey an adequate idea of the gradual development of the Western Hemisphere." Condition: There is a bit of mottling to the cloth at the bottom of the covers. Bright gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. There are a few tiny, light stains at the long edge of the text block. Nice interior - the pages are clean and appear unread with only light age-toning. A typed letter from the book's paper manufacturer has been affixed to the front end paper. The Ex Libris label of the paper company's President has been affixed to the front pastedown. Overall the book is in Very Good+ condition.
