No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Signed by the author as "Daniel S. Lamont." Original letter handwritten in black ink on beige "Executive Mansion, Washington" stationery. December 28, 1888. 4 1/2" x 7." Unpaginated, two pages (one leaf folded in half and written on two sides). Letter is very clean and intact except for light age toning, a few wrinkles, discoloration on the corners, and vertical and horizontal fold lines. A Very Good copy. This is a handwritten letter addressed to William Storey ("Mr. Storey") from Daniel Scott Lamont (1851-1905), an American politician and businessman. Lamont served as Private Secretary to Grover Cleveland from 1885-1889 and Secretary of War from 1893-1897 under Cleveland's administration. After his political career, Lamont became Vice President of the Northern Pacific Railway from 1898-1904 and the director of several banks and corporations. In this letter, Lamont writes, "Dear Sir: If you will call at ten o'clock tomorrow morning I shall find great pleasure in introducing you to the President, Very truly yours, Daniel S. Lamont; The Honorable Mr. Storey. Signed by Author(s).

Grover Cleveland's private secretary while governor of New York continued in this capacity when Cleveland was elected U.S. president in 1885, then was named his Secretary of War during his second term (1893-97). On blue-imprinted "Executive Mansion" letterhead, Lamont does something he no doubt did on countless occasions on the president's behalf: Decline an invitation, this time from the persistent mayor of Lowell, Massachusetts. In part: "The President directs me to. thank you for the courtesy of the invitation conveyed therein to go to Lowell on June 6th upon the occasion of the visit there of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. He has, however, been obliged to decline the latter's invitation to attend the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the organization on June 4th.:" Boldly signed at the conclusion.
