Softcover. Condition: Very Good. In Very Good+ condition. A large-format, profusely illustrated volume issued in conjunction with the Smithsonian's exhibition commemorating the expedition of 1838-42. Controversial in its day but largely forgotten now, the expedition proved that Antarctica was a continent, produced many still-valuable maps of Pacific islands, and brought back the nucleus of the Smithsonian's natural history collections. Not a narrative history like William Stanton's The Great United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842 (1975), this is a collection of essays evaluating the scientific contributions made by the expedition. The text will appeal primarily to readers interested in the history of American science, but the numerous well-produced illustrations may appeal to a wider audience.

Wraps. Condition: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. The format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. xiv, 330 pages. This is in a two column format. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Sticker stain on back cover. Since 1940, the National Archives has been microfilming selected groups of Federal records that have high research value. The contents include Compiled Military Service Records, Records Relating to Service in the Regular U.S. Military, Veterans' Claims, Miscellaneous Records Relating to Military Service. A typical record gives the soldier's name, rank, military unit, and dates of entry into the services and separation by discharge, desertion, or death. It may also show the soldier's age, place of birth,m and residence at the time of enlistment. The service records were compiled under a War Department program. The compiled military service records are arranged by war, thereunder by State, thereunder by regiment or other military unit, and thereunder alphabetically by surname. Cynthia Fox was Deputy Director of the Textual Archives Services Division. Constance Potter was a reference archivist specializing in federal records of genealogical interest held at the National Archives and Records Administration. The National Archives Trust Fund Board shall consist of the Archivist of the United States, as Chairman, and the Secretary of the Treasury and the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Membership on the Board is not an office within the meaning of the statutes of the United States. The National Archives was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt, but its major holdings date back to 1775. They capture the sweep of the past: slave ship manifests and the Emancipation Proclamation; captured German records and the Japanese surrender documents from World War II; journals of polar expeditions and photographs of Dust Bowl farmers; Indian treaties making transitory promises; and a richly bound document bearing the bold signature "Bonaparte"â"the Louisiana Purchase Treaty that doubled the territory of the young republic. NARA keeps only those Federal records that are judged to have continuing valueâ"about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year. By now, they add up to a formidable number, diverse in form as well as in content. There are approximately 13.5 billion pages of textual records; 10 million maps, charts, and architectural and engineering drawings; 40 million still photographs, digital images, filmstrips, and graphics; 40 million aerial photographs; more than 448 million feet of motion picture film; 992,000 video and sound recordings; and 837 terabytes of electronic data. All of these materials are preserved because they are important to the workings of Government, have long-term research worth, or provide information of value to citizens.
