The author says that the methods of interpreting the word of God should unfold to us the revelation of God, and not transform it through the wisdom of men. They maintain that a defense of scriptural doctrines implies that we contend not merely for what is expressly stated in the Scriptures but also for what may be clearly inferred from the truths revealed. These truths are violently opposed and thus call for unceasing vigilance on the part of those who adhere to the faith. The author says there are various methods of professedly defending the doctrines of the gospel but he questions whether some of these have a doubtful claim to be included in the duty enjoined in the text. The author concludes by giving several points related to the duty of defending the Christian faith and its significance.
