This collection of letters by the French astronomer Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix (according to some sources, his first name was Augustin) provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of 18th-century astronomy. The reprint of his Uranography follows the letters. "Uranographie" is a list of deep-sky objects addressed to the general public. It was published for the first time in 1771 with a preface, in which he stated that his passion for astronomy was equal to the passion of a lover for his mistress. Darquier was born on November 23, 1718 in Toulouse (Rue Darquier 8), France. He was so passionate in his research that he had an observatory built in his own house, hired scholars to have his calculations made and trained pupils. Using a 2.5 inch achromatic refractor with 42 inch focal length (f/16.8) he observed sunspots and other astronomical phenomena. The observations made between 1748 and 1773 are collected in his book Observations Astronomiques faites Toulouse (Avignon 1777). While searching for the comet of 1779 he found the Ring nebula M57 in February 1779 (just a few days after Messier) describing it as "a very dull nebula, but perfectly outlined; as large as Jupiter and looks like a fading planet". M57, or the Ring Nebula, is a planetary nebula, the glowing remains of a sun-like star. The tiny white dot in the center of the nebula is the star s hot core, called a white dwarf. M57 is about 2,000 light-years away in the constellation Lyra, and is best observed during August. Discovered by the French astronomer Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix in 1779, the Ring Nebula has an apparent magnitude of 8.8 and can be spotted with moderately sized telescopes. Friedrich von Hahn found the central star about 1795; it was first photographed by Eugen v. Gothard in 1888. William Herschel created the term "Planetary Nebula" in 1785 for those objects looking like a planet's disk - maybe adopting Darquier's description and still impressed by his finding of Uranus in 1781. Darquier observed the new planet in the same year and calculated its orbit. Between 1791 and 1798 he made an extensive star catalogue, later used by Lalande.
