Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. A rare pulp tour guide to the more underground Paris, with listings of brothels, here euphemize, but barely, as "Maisons de Rendez-Vous". Three pages of such listings, all of which are given as "Madame" this or that -- Madame Leroy, Madame Berry, Madame Ginette, etc. etc. 68 in all, all coming with non-specific addresses, meaning the Foubourg or street name is given, but not the street number or other info that would be enough to get you there without further inquiry. The addresses do show to us, though, that such pleasure-seeking could be found in easy distance from virtually any part of the city! N.d., but BNF listing gives 1932 date. 12mo. 17.5 by 10.5 cm. Unpaginated, 50 leaves of pulp paper, or 100 pages thus, and six leaves of glossy paper, these each containing a b/w photo plate, full page, of a Parisian nightspot, entertainer and/or louche atmosphere. Glossy sheets all blank on one side. Scarce, with only copies listed on OCLC First Search at BNF and a Swedish library. The latter's listing doesn't quite correspond to our book in its points, but we will assume it is indeed the same thing or close enough. We know nothing about the author other than his name, and we think it is likely that "Jacques Darys" is a pseudonym, quite possibly, if so, for an author of some repute at the time. The lists of places to go also include places with no notoriety, such as the list of cinemas, of theatres and of ticket agents. But there are lists of night clubs, restaurants du nuit, dancehalls and music-halls that could have sordid entries, of course. A curious aspect of this tour guide is that there is proferred a sixteen chapter novella -- the chapters are very short -- about a visitor to Paris who takes in its salacious delights. This story is rendered in both French and English. The notion clearly was to titillate and inspire the man looking for a good time, or to be more specific, the sexual tourist. And let's face it -- Paris has forever been a magnet for its lurid charms as much as for its high culture, and much of its irresistible charm for many derives from its bounty both high and low that can be partaken in quick succession. Not to be ignored are the photos in the book. The frontis shows a contortionist. The next photo features a topless violinist, and back then, topless was even naughtier than it would be viewed as later. Other photos are of dancing in a bar that is the type of dive depicted in countless movies set in Paris -- indeed, the type of bar that became a cliche of sorts. The final photo is of a dancer wearing a skimpy costume a la Josephine Baker, and someone who does indeed, resemble Ms. Baker, but shorter, and clearly not the legendary entertainer herself. Tamer, perhaps, are photos of dancers doing the cancan, and of a pianist in a Art Deco-ish Montparnasse nightclub, This was issued as a cheap throwaway paperback, and thus the highly acidic pulp paper is heavily browned. The cover has wear along its edges, which mainly takes the form of a very slender loss of the surface blue. Overall, though, we can't imagine a copy surviving in better shape than this one, and given what it is, we grade it Near Fine, and one could make a case that it is in Fine condition, but again, that is relative to other paperbacks or softbound books of this age, or even half this age.
