Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
Other. ALS, 1 page (one leaf, folded once). In Good plus condition. Some moderate uneven age toning overall. Addressed from Pera [Constantinople], and dated 31 May 1821. In French. Written in a clear secretarial hand and signed by Dashkov, integral blank. RW Consignment. Shelved at Rockville, Room A, General Ephemera Part 2. Addressed to "Messrs Jousselin et Brasch, St. Petersbourg," a Franco-German banking and commission house active in the Russian capital during the 1820s, known from contemporary records as agents for Breguet and other European firms. Writing from the Russian diplomatic quarter at Pera, Constantinople, Dashkov introduces and recommends "Mr. Brown, voyageur Anglois", an English traveler of good character, to his correspondents. He praises Brown's agreeable qualities, notes his own satisfaction in the acquaintance, and expresses confidence that the recipients will find him equally worthy of esteem. This letter was written during Dashkov's posting to the Ottoman Empire, just as the Greek War of Independence erupted (March 1821), a crisis in which Russian-Ottoman relations were of critical importance. Dashkov is best remembered as Russia's first official envoy to the United States (18081817), establishing formal Russian-American diplomatic ties during the Madison administration. Letters from his subsequent Ottoman service are rare. 1402589. Special Collections.
