Mehrfach ausgezeichneter Klassiker des französichen Film noir, den François Truffaut als den besten Kriminalfilm bezeichnete, den er je gesehen habe. Der amerikanische Regisseur J. Dassin, Sohn eine…s russisch-jüdischen Emigranten, war nach ersten Hollywooderfolgen 1951 nach Europa emigriert, als er nach einer Denunziation vor das berüchtigte "Komitee für unamerikanische Umtriebe" geladen wurde und dadurch seine Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten in Hollywood verlor. Tatsächlich war er ab 1930 Mitglied der Kommunistischen Partei der USA gewesen, aber nach Abschluß des Hitler-Stalin-Paktes enttäuscht wieder ausgetreten. Mit Rififi konnte er erst 1955 seinen ersten Film im französischen Exil drehen, da von amerikanischer Seite Druck auf europäische Produzenten ausgeübt wurde, die exilierte Amerikaner beschäftigten und die dadurch befürchten mußten, ihre Filme könnten von den USA boykottiert werden. Dassin war mit der griechischen Schauspielerin, Sängerin und langjährigen griechischen Kulturministerin Melina Mercouri verheiratet und lebte später mit ihr in Griechenland. Sprache: de.
