Al-Sanhaji's concise grammatical primer, issued here under the latinized title "Giarrumia", is a defining production of the Typographia Medicea and one of the earliest substantial attempts to equip European readers and missionaries with a practical introduction to Arabic. - The text is the celebrated "al-Ajurrumiyya" by the 14th-century Moroccan scholar Muhammad ibn Da'ud al-Sanhaji, known as Ibn Ajurrum: a short, immensely influential elementary grammar composed in Mecca and distilled from a wider grammatical tradition rooted in the "Kitab al-Jumal" of al-Zajjaji. Its radical brevity made it a foundational schoolbook, concise enough for memorization, yet authoritative enough to shape generations of students of Arabic syntax. - Printed in Robert Granjon's Arabic types at the initiative of Giovan Battista Raimondi, the edition belongs to the Medici Oriental Press's ambitious Roman programme of producing learned and devotional books in Eastern languages. Founded under the patronage of Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici and supported by Pope Gregory XIII, the press joined philology, commerce, and confessional policy in a single enterprise aimed at the eastern Mediterranean and the Near East. This small quarto thus stands at the intersection of Arabic grammatical scholarship and late Renaissance oriental printing.
