He is also known for this work together his work on secret societies, in which he points out links between Freemasonry and the French Revolution, and his anti-Masonic views. Daumas was the Director of the Algerian Affairs an the French Ministry of War. Between 1837 and 1839 , when he was a Consul at Mascara, he met several times with the leader of the Algerian national movement Emir Abdul Qadir al-Jaza'iri. The work consists of two parts, the first is entitled " The Horses of the Sahara", while part II is entitled " The manners of the desert" with chapters on gazelle and ostrich hunting, greyhounds, hawking etc. An English edition appeared in London in 1863 translated by James Hutton.
