Octavo hardcover (VG+) in d/w (VG+); all our specials have minimal description to keep listing them viable. They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently they are superior examples. Ordering more than one book may reduce your overall postage costs.

First editions. 100 quarto volumes. Variously paginated and with all issues profusely illustrated in color. Publisher's pictorial color wrappers. All in excellent condition with zero spine creases or any of the other problems that plague large floppy magazines. Not a rare item but certainly very difficult to find the first one hundred issues (all out of print now) in this conditionThe Believer and the Black Clock (edited by Steve Erickson and put out by CalArts from 2004 to 2016) were/are the most forward thinking literary journals of early 21st century America. The first editors of The Believer (Heidi Julavits, Ed Park and and Vendela Vita), saw the magazine as a platform free of cynicism, one which encouraged and fostered experimentation rather than just be dismissive of it. Indeed the subtitle of the magazine's Manifesto (in the first issue) was "?A Call for a New Era of Experimentation, and a Book Culture That Will Support It.? They are all visually quite impressive as well. It continues to be published until this day. From Mark Sarvas? blog The Elegant Variation: ?Someone recently told Heidi Julavits that she?ll be remembered most for a Believer essay that appeared in the magazine?s March 2003 debut issue. In that piece, titled, ?Rejoice! Believe! Be Strong and Read Hard!? she argued against snark, against ?wit for wit?s sake,? against ?the hostile, knowing, bitter tone of contempt,? against a reviewing culture defined by sarcasm and anti-intellectualism.? Some of the better known contributors to this magazine include: David Foster Wallace; Jonathan Lethem; Sheila Heti; Nick Hornby; Zadie Smith; George Saunders; Ben Marcus & etc.
