Index. DJ has some wear and soiling. David B. Tyler, was an American naval historian and professor. He earned his doctorate at Columbia. His first volume on maritime history, "Steam Conquers the Atlantic" (Appleton-Century, 1939), was used for years as a text at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The New York Times Book Review called his account "richly detailed and well written." Dr. Tyler wrote and edited several other books and won a Guggenheim fellowship for his work. He was on the boards of the Long Island and Richmond County Historical Societies. He started teaching history at Brooklyn and Hobart Colleges but spent most of his career at Wagner College on Staten Island, where he was on the faculty for 45 years. During WWII, Dr. Tyler served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve, and wrote a history of the Maritime Commission's wartime role. The United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842 was an exploring and surveying expedition of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding lands conducted by the United States. The original appointed commanding officer was Commodore Thomas Catesby Jones. Funding for the original expedition was requested by President John Quincy Adams in 1828, however, Congress would not implement funding until eight years later. In May 1836, the oceanic exploration voyage was finally authorized by Congress and created by President Andrew Jackson. The expedition is sometimes called the "Wilkes Expedition" in honor of its next appointed commanding officer, United States Navy Lieutenant Charles Wilkes. The expedition was of major importance to the growth of science in the United States, in particular the then-young field of oceanography. During the event, armed conflict between Pacific islanders and the expedition was common and dozens of natives were killed in action, as well as a few Americans.
