Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 2010 OUP hardcover edition. Some reading wear else good condition. The first volume in The Oxford Handbook of Auditory Science, The Ear serves both as an introduction and as a reference work for anyone interested in the auditory periphery. Each chapter includes a mix of tutorial and advanced information. Throughout the book, the focus is on mechanistic, functional evidence, with many chapters concentrating on cellular and molecular explanations of cochlear function. In addition to basic function, the development and regeneration of the inner ear are described, as are the growing body of ear-related genes identified through studies of human deafness and animal mutants. This knowledge is applied to the human condition in descriptions of pathogenic mechanisms, and existing therapies, especially the cochlear implant. Whether the reader is a student entering the field, a clinical practitioner, or a worker in an allied field of study, this volume will be a valuable resource of basic information, and perhaps a catalyst to making their own contributions to the ongoing challenge, and adventure, of understanding the mysteries of the ear. Contents 1 Introduction and overview - Paul A Fuchs 2 The clinical cochlea - Lawrence R Lustig 3 External and middle ear function - John J Rosowski 4 Otoacoustic emissions and evoked potentials - David T Kemp 5 Cochlear mechanics, tuning, non-linearities - Egbert de Boer and Alfred L Nuttall 6 Electromotility of outer hair cells - Kuni H Iwasa 7 Inner ear fluid homeostasis - Daniel C Marcus and Philine Wangemann 8 Hair bundle structure and mechanotransduction - Carole M Hackney and David N Furness 9 The afferent synapse - Jonathan Ashmore 10 Efferent innervation and function - A Belen Elgoyhen and Paul A Fuchs 11 Cochlear supporting cells - Jonathan Gale and Daniel Jagger 12 Development of the inner ear - Lynne M Bianchi and Paul A Fuchs 13 Regeneration in the cochlea - Douglas A Cotanche 14 Genetics of hearing loss - Cynthia C Morton and Anne BS Giersch 15 Hearing aids and cochlear implants - John K Niparko and Andrea Marlowe.…

Edited by Leslie Jones and Jessica Morgan and with contributions by Marie de Brugerolle, Bice Curiger, Douglas Eklund, Russell Ferguson, Rainer Fuchs, Tim Griffin, Friedrich Meschede, David Salle, and John C. Welchman. "A major figure in contemporary art, John Baldessari is widely considered one of the most influential artists to emerge since the mid-1960s. From his early text-and-image paintings to his more recent photo collages and installations, Baldessari has continued to make art that addresses the social impact of mass culture, often playfully through strategies of appropriation and deconstruction. Baldessari's lifelong interest in language, written and visual, and the interaction between the two, raises questions about the nature of communication and perception. More than 400 illustrations are presented in full color in this monograph published in conjunction with a major exhibition organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Tate Modern in London. Eleven essays by critics, curators, art historians, and an artist and former student of Baldessari's round out this volume. Few contemporary artists have achieved the range and relevance of Baldessari's oeuvre, which is finally given its due in this elegant retrospective book." --publisher's statement. Very Good / Fine. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In recent years, the media has been awash in exuberant tales of the arrival of the information superhighway, when television will explode with exciting possibilities, offering some 500 channels as well as a marriage of TV and computer that will provide, on command, access to the latest movies, magazines, newspapers, books, sports events, stock exchange figures, your bank account, and much, much more. And the major TV networks, pundits add, will be doomed toextinction by this revolution in cable, computers, and fiber optics. But in Television Today and Tomorrow, Gene Jankowski--former President and Chairman of the CBS Broadcast Group--and David Fuchs--also aformer top executive at CBS--tell a different story. They predict a bumpy road ahead for the information superhighway, and the major networks, they say, are abundantly healthy and will remain so well into the next century. The information superhighway, Jankowski and Fuchs admit, will dramatically increase the distribution channels, but it will have little impact on the amount of programming created--and this may spell disaster. The authors show how the networks began as a way toprovide programs to local stations (who could not afford to produce their own), who in turn provided the distribution that gave networks access to mass audiences and ultimately large advertisingdollars. They then offer us an inside look at television production--showing us, for instance, a veteran scriptwriter putting together a breakfast table scene for "Cloud Nine"--to underscore how much effort goes into producing just two minutes of primetime programming. They reveal that the present 20 channels require some 20,000 hours of programming each year, which is more than all the Broadway plays produced in this century, and they conclude that without a dramatic increase in programming(which won't happen if only because of the very finite supply of talent), the superhighway will be jammed bumper-to-bumper with reruns, old movies, and inexpensive programming aimed at tightly focusedaudiences ("narrowcasting" as opposed to "broadcasting"). This is hardly the bonanza the pundits have promised. The authors point out that the media blitz about the new technology has hardly focused on programming, or on funding, or on what needs these 500 channels will fill. The major networks, on the other hand, will remain the only means of reaching the whole country, and the only channels that offer a full schedule of current, live, and original programs, free of charge. And thus they willcontinue to attract most of the audience of TV viewers. The real loser in the cable revolution, the authors contend, is PBS, whose role as an alternative to network TV has been usurped by cablestations such as The Discovery Channel and Nickelodeon. This is a brass tacks look at television with an eye on the bottom line by two men who boast over sixty years of experience in the medium. If you want to understand television in America, where it came from and where it is going, you will need to read this book. This is a look at television with an eye on the bottom line.
