The first edition of David Carey's satirical work on Parisian life, illustrated with hand-colour plates throughout by eminent illustrator George Cruikshank. The first edition, early issue of this work. A large paper copy. An armorial binding, with 'H.A.J.' and two crossed swords in gilt to the front board, and a blind stamp of Henry Arthur Johnstone, 1899, on the doublures. Johnstone was a renowned bookseller at the turn of the twentieth century, and was also a well known book collector. His library was important at the time, and it was known for its fine quality. Some of his books are now in the Folger Shakespeare Library. A satirical work looking at Paris in the early nineteenth century, being a parody of 'Pierce Egan's Life in London'. The author provides a satirical look at Parisian life. Illustrated with a hand-colour frontispiece, twenty hand-colour plates, and numerous in-text engravings. Written by David Carey, a journalist and poet. He wrote this work after going to paris to try and help his poor health, though the trip failed to help his health. Illustrated by Cruikshank was a caricaturist who is well known for his book illustrations for Charles Dickens. He is often hailed as the 'modern Hogarth'. Bound without the half-title. Bound with a binder's director leaf to the rear. Collated, complete. Rebound in a full morocco binding. Externally, smart. A little rubbing to the joints. Light discolouration to the spine and to the head of the boards. Some rubbing to the extremities. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd scattered spot. The plates are bright, with only a couple of spots. Very Good. book.
