Friedrichs von Melancholie geprägtes Welt- und Selbstverständnis wird als exemplarisch für das Künstlerbild in der Epoche der Romantik gesehen. Der Maler macht mit seinen Werken bei weitgehend unbekannten Bildkontexten sinnoffene Angebote, die den Betrachter mit seiner angesprochenen Gefühlswelt in den Deutungsprozess einbeziehen.
