Hardcover. First edition (& 1st printing). SF novel, expanded from the short story of the same title as by ''Michael Stall'' which had appeared in New Writings In SF 23 in 1973. One of two sf novels written for Robert Hale by Heptonstall as ''Jack Rhys''. A rare UK hardcover (Robert Hale published primarily for the library marke…t) and apart from a Readers Union book club edition in 1982, not reprinted since. ''pseudonym of David Michael Heptonstall, UK author of two sf novels for Robert Hale Limited, The Eternity Merchants (1981), a space opera, and THE FIVE DOORS (early version as by Michael Stall in New Writings in SF 23, anth 1973, ed Kenneth Bulmer; exp 1981), whose 'doors' (the first of which appears on Earth) are a succession of Stargates to other planets. The Michael Stall pseudonym is obviously derived from the author's real name'' (John Clute/Encyclopedia of SF, 3rd edition). Fine copy in a fine dustjacket.

SF novel, one of two written for Robert Hale - a publisher who produced books primarily for the library market (still flourishing in the 1970s) and so most titles are very uncommon: ''pseudonym of David Michael Heptonstall, UK author of two sf novels for Robert Hale Limited, THE ETERNIT…Y MERCHANTS (1981), a space opera, and The Five Doors (early version as by ''Michael Stall'' in New Writings in SF 23 (1973, ed Kenneth Bulmer; exp 1981), whose ''doors'' (the first of which appears on Earth) are a succession of Stargates to other planets. The Michael Stall pseudonym is obviously derived from the author's real name. Robert Hale was a UK publishing firm which from 1936 - 1984, though mainly in the 1970s, published more than 450 sf novels, in hardbound editions, primarily for the library market. A large majority of titles originating with the firm were uniform in length (192 pages) and routine in substance, most being Space Operas varied with occasional Dystopias, though other forms of sf also featured'' (John Clute & David Langford/Encyclopedia of SF, 3rd Edition)'' (John Clute/Encyclopedia of SF, 3rd Edition). Top page edges spotted, else a fine copy in an almost fine price-clipped dustjacket with a little dust-soiling to rear (white) panel.
