Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Near Good. 1st Edition. A collection of twelve issues of 'Citadel', published in Cairo by the British Institute or (from August 1943 of this gathering) the British Council, comprising: October and November 1942; March, April, May, August, September, and December 1943; and January, March, April, and June 1944. 8vo. Stapled wrappers. 40pp.-52pp. Literature, criticism, reportage, stories, and poetry, including Winston Churchill, E. M. Forster, W. H. Auden, Lawrence Durrell, Stella Gibbons, Walter de la Mare, Gerald Kersh, Stephen Spender, Keith Douglas, John Lehmann, Bernard Spencer, Osbert Sitwell, Cecil Day Lewis, H. V. Morton, Eric Partridge, Hugh Walpole, Osbert Lancaster, John Waller, Henry Baerlein, Geoffrey Faber, Erik de Mauny, R. B. Cunninghame Graham, Ivor Brown, B. Ifor Evans, W. B. Yeats, Virginia Woolf, and Wilfred Owen. Where the editor is named, it is David Hicks except for the earliest issue here, when Hicks assisted R. D. Smith. It appears from that issue that 'Citadel' had been running since the start of 1942, appearing monthly, and the issue for June 1944 describes itself as the final one. Although this offering is by no means a complete run, then, 'Citadel' is extremely rare in such quantity; this cataloguer can only locate the odd issue in institutions worldwide, with the slight exception of a handful of copies at the University of Delaware and the notable exception of the National Library of Israel, which looks to have them all. The rarity is hardly surprising for a wartime anglophone periodical priced in piastres, with an agent for Palestine rather than, say, London. Inevitably, condition is a factor, the staples rusted so that the wrappers are often detached (but present) or precarious, as well as rubbed, sometimes rather soiled and with just occasional, insignificant insect action but, in general, the contents are clean. The issue for May 1944 will be included in addition, although its condition is rough.
