Auslöser des Zw…eiten Golfkriegs war die Invasion Kuwaits durch den Irak. Ein Memorandum, das den Einheiten des US Militärs übermittelt worden war, sollte die Berichterstattung so kanalisieren, dass es den politischen Zielen des Krieges förderlich war. Tatsächlich blieb das Medienbild des Irak- Krieges das eines "sauberen" Krieges, von dem Aktionen und Angriffe, aber nicht die Folgen gezeigt wurden. Die Bildproduktion bestand vorwiegend aus vom Geschehen distanzierten Nachtaufnahmen.Im Unterschied dazu wurden die Bilder von Nine Eleven weltweit auf fast allen TV-Kanälen übertragen. Die Ereignisse wurden dadurch verfügbar gemacht - und zeigten die Verwundbarkeit der USA. Wenn sich Künstler in Krisengebiete begeben, tun sie dies auch ohne Einverständnis der Armee. Ihre Arbeiten unterscheiden sich von der journalistischen Berichterstattung, kreisen aber um ähnliche Fragen: nach Glaubwürdigkeit, Transparenz, Aktualität.
