Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This book is a hybrid, part academic part autobiography, containing accounts of marine geological and oceanographic work, geographical accounts and impressions of places visited, personal recollections of activities undertaken, and comments on situations encountered. Apart from the Introduction, the period covered is from the mid-1960s up to almost the present, more than 50 years. During this period, working practices at sea have changed considerably, as have many of the places visited. An attempt is made to describe and account for these changes. The region covered in most detail is the South Pacific, including its islands. At the beginning of the period, many of these were still colonial territories, but all gained their independence to a greater or lesser extent, by the end of the 20th century. This was often accompanied by social and political upheaval, and an attempt is made to describe this and the reasons for it; in essence, a comparison of "The Old Pacific" with its more modern counterpart. Finally, the book can be considered in some respects to be a travelogue, of interest to people considering visiting any of the places mentioned and wishing to compare how they are now with how they were in the past. Unique features, compared with other books are: a) the wide geographical area covered, b) the long time period covered, and c) the degree of personal involvement with both the places and activities described. This book is a hybrid, part academic part autobiography, containing accounts of marine geological and oceanographic work, geographical accounts and impressions of places visited, personal recollections of activities undertaken, and comments on situations encountered. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The book is an historical monograph on deep-sea mineral-related activities and attitudes towards deep-sea mining in the 20th Century which makes comparisons with the current situation in regard to those activities and attitudes. It reviews developments in the study of, and prospects and plans for mining deep-sea manganese nodules, cobalt-rich crusts, hydrothermal deposits, and phosphorites, and discusses associated environmental, technological, and economic issues. It is based on several sources. First, the author's experience gleaned from around 50 years of attending conferences on the subject (the most important of which was the annual Underwater Mining Institutes held from 1970 onwards at which much of the material in the book was first exposed), second, discussions with and advice from the author's colleagues on the subject, all attributed, and third, the published literature. The target audiences are marine mining companies and their associates, marine environmentalists, UN and Government administrators responsible for seabed activities, undergraduate students of marine affairs and history, and interested lay persons. Unique features include the widespread sources used including unpublished conference proceedings and reports, personal insights gleaned from more than 50 years of working in the field, the author's publications dating from 1967-2022, and attributed personal communications from the author's colleagues.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The book is an historical monograph on deep-sea mineral-related activities and attitudes towards deep-sea mining in the 20th Century which makes comparisons with the current situation in regard to those activities and attitudes. Unique features include the widespread sources used including unpublished conference proceedings and reports, personal insights gleaned from more than 50 years of working in the field, the author's publications dating from 1967-2022, and attributed personal communications from the author's colleagues.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 164 pp. Englisch.
