Deuxième édition en format in-quarto de ce volume (tome II) des Mémoires de l'Académie Royale de Chirurgie. Ce mémoire novateur et fondamental de Daviel occupe les pages 337-354 ; il est illustré de 2 planches. Daviel y expose la technique qu'il a inventée (extraction extracapsulaire après incision de la cornée) et les résultats (182 succès sur 206 interventions), nettement supérieurs à ceux obtenus avec la méthode traditionnelle par abaissement. Cette publication eut un retentissement considérable, ayant transformé le pronostic fonctionnel des patients atteints de cataracte et souvent alors voués à la cécité. Jacques Daviel (1693-1762) fut oculiste et chirurgien de l'Hôtel-Dieu de Marseille. Original-Broschur, eingelegt in Original-Halbleinenmappe mit Titelschild - Dem Vorwort zufolge neu übersetzte deutsche Ausgabe von Daviels Bericht an die schwedische Akademie der Wissenschaften von 1758 "über zwei angewachsene Staare (Cataracte)", mit einer geschichtlichen Einführung von O. Becker. Die erste Übertragung ins Deutsche war unzureichend, weil die Übersetzer die in der Augenheilkunde gebräuchliche Terminologie nicht kannten und auch bei der vorliegenden mußte "nachgebessert" werden, weil die Übersetzer wiederum keine Ärzte waren. Das Frontispiz zeigt einen in Lichtdruck ausgeführten Kupferstich, der seine Entstehung einem Patienten verdankt, dem Daviel das Augenlicht wiedergegeben hatte. Jacques Daviel war ein französischer Augenarzt, der eine bis Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts angewendete Operationsmethode zur Behandlung des Grauen Stars entwickelte.

The famous French ophthalmologist originated the modern surgical treatment of cataract by removal of the lens.
