Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Book is clean with a square, tight binding and bright, white pages. Dust jacket has scuffs, scratches and minor wear on the edges that are difficult to see in the scans. Errata page included. Photographs by David Scheinbaum With essays by Spencer G. Lucas, Garrick Bailey, and Andrew Davis Foreword by Beaumont Newhall The Bisti Badlands in northwestern New Mexico stand out against the treeless plain of the San Juan Basin, their starkness heightened by an almost total lack of vegetation. The clay and rock soil has eroded into a variety of weird shapes that appear barren and uninviting to some observers. To others, the strange formations have a dramatic and mysterious beauty. The area also contains some of the oldest plant and animal fossils in North America. There are coal deposits from about seventy million years ago and extensive evidence that documents the extinction of the dinosaur and the beginning of the age of mammals. The area is not only geologically significant. It was inhabited by the Anasazi Indians and today is home to the Navajo. Strip mining begun in the 1970s threatened to destroy the area and prompted conservation groups to set aside a portion as wilderness. The rest continues to be mined for coal and other mineral de-posits, destroying much of the fragile environment. With stark and powerful imagery, David Scheinbaum has recorded the strange beauty of the bad-lands. Many of his pictures are from outside the wilderness area and depict geologic formations that already have been decimated. His photographs, accompanied here by essays on the scientific, historical, and cultural significance of the area, pay tribute to a unique and fragile desert landscape. Paperback. Condition: New. Marked by a rigorously close textual reading, detached frombiographical or other extratextual material, New Criticism was thedominant literary theory of the mid-twentieth century. Since thattime, schools of literary criticism have arisen in support of or in opposition tothe approach advocated by the New Critics. Nonetheless, the theory remainsone of the most important sources for groundbreaking criticism and continuesto be a controversial approach to reading literature. Praising It New is the first anthology of New Criticism to be printed in fifty years. It includes important essays by such influential poets and critics as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, Yvor Winters,Cleanth Brooks, R. P. Blackmur, W. K. Wimsatt, and Robert Penn Warren.Together, these authors ushered in the modernist age of poetry and criticismand transformed the teaching of literature in the schools. As the Americanpoet and critic Randall Jarrell once noted: "I do not believe there has been anotherage in which so much extraordinarily good criticism of poetry hasbeen written." This anthology now makes much of the best American poetry criticism availableagain, and includes short biographies and selected bibliographies of itschief figures. Praising It New is the perfect introduction for students to the best American poetry criticism of the twentieth century.…
