Octavo, brown textured boards (hardcover), 112 pp. Near Fine, with small former-owner signature. From Preface: This is a book of tall stories and yarns. No claim is made that they originated in the mountains, or that they are in any way peculiar to that section. Variations of most of these stories are told everywhere. However, many of the stories are rare mountain versions whose origins can be traced back through the mountaineers' Scotch, Irish and German ancestry to much earlier periods in Europe. Two main objectives were kept in mind in planning and writing this book. One was to use as much of the vivid, expressive mountain vernacular as possible in telling the stories. Another objective was to try to give a true insight into the character of typical mountaineers, and to portray them as interesting, resourceful people who enjoyed life to the fullest, in spite of the strenuous demands of their harsh environment.
