unbound. 1 page, 8 x 5 inches, Washington, D.C., February 8, 1887. In this letter, Davis responds to a request for the previous Secretary of State's autograph (Frederick T. Frelinghuysen, who died in office). In part: "I regret that I am unable to comply with your request for an autograph of Mr. Frelinghuysen or to give you information on the subject." Two partial tears on the back from tape removal; very good(-) condition. Grant's Secretary of the Alabama Claims Commission, who succeeded in negotiating damage payments from Great Britain.
