First Edition in German of two Cardiological Classics. John Ford Davis (1773-1864) - "The term carditis was applied largely… to cases of pericarditis in older literature, with fever, tachycardia and cardiac pain. Though a colleague suggested that his cases were varieties of rheumatic heart disease, he rejected this, but subsequently (1832) he wrote on pericarditis and rheumatism of the heart. His book was widely quoted in contemporary literature, and is cited by Forbes in his bibliography, accompanying his translation of Laennec." Bedford 261 (1808 1st. Engl. Ed.). Wilhelm Carl Wells (1757-1817) - "David Pitcairn is accredited with the first reference to rheumatism as a cause of cardiac disease, in a lecture given in 1788. Jenner read a paper on the same subject in 1789, but the first clinical report on the subject to be published was that by Wells. It was reprinted in Willius & Keys, Cardiac Classics (1941): "On rheumatism of the heart" Trans. Soc. Improve. med. chir. Knowl., (1812) 3, pp.373-424). This German translation was the first published work of the famous medical historian Johann Ludwig Choulant (1791-1808), at that time a 25 year old bachelor of medicine. Added to the Germand edition is an introduction by Friedrich Ludwig Kreysig (1779-1839), author of a major textbook on heart diseases. Kreysig has also added some notes to the paper by Wells which are printed at the end of the book. see - Bedford No. 26+678 (Engl. Ed.); Garrison & Morton No. 2740 (1812); Choulant-Frank, p.5.
