Davis was a successful criminal lawyer and slaveholder, served in the pre-Civil War Mississippi legislature and was Brigadier General during the war; much of this account describes political machinations leading up to the war. Good, an ex-library copy with some spots on the front board, blind stamp on title page, and various vestiges of lending sheet removal at the back and library call numbers. Inner hinges weak in spots. Scarce in this first edition.
