First published on the occasion of an exhibition held October 4, 1995 - January 21, 1996 at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. This magnificent celebration of the world's oldest and most diverse artistic traditions is the definitive book on African art. Ranging from the oldest known human artifact, circa 1.6 million BC, to pieces made within living memory, the objects collected in this extraordinary volume reflect a continent of enormous cultural and historical scope. Arranged chronologically within seven geographical sections, it offers an astonishing array of sculptures in wood, bronze, stone, and gold, as well as mural paintings, ceremonial pieces, ceramics, jewelry, and textiles culled from private and public collections around the world. Commentary by renowned scholars illuminates the cultural and historical significance of these pieces, and in-depth authoritative texts highlight critical aspects of each region. Together these words and images take readers on an artistic grand tour through a continent of unparalleled diversity, and towards the thrilling discovery of not one Africa, but many. Why Art? by Kwame Anthony Appiah; Europe, African Art, and the Uncanny by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; The African Past by Peter Garlake; Ancient Egypt and Nubia (89 objects) by Edna R. Signed
Reprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. pp. 13-20. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - Crumpled, light edged, otherwise clean. - From the text: My acquaintance with Albin Lesky began in April 1938 when I bought in Leipzig his then newly published book, Die griechische Tragödie (Kroners Taschenausgabe 143); I well remember that even tlirough the mists of my still limited familiarity with the German language Lesky already shone to me as a beacon of sanity and scholarship in the welter of brutality and unreason which in those grim and tragic days threatened to engulf us. To-day, when brutality and unreason, unchanged except in dress, habitat and jargon, are once again as menacing as they were in 1938, it might seem appropriate to offer to our colleague on his seventieth birthday a paper dealing with some aspect of the field of Greek tragedy, which he has made so specially his own. It is however very clear to me that many people better qualified than I to deal with such topics in a manner worthy of our Jubilar, will be found to have reached just this conclusion; and 1 have therefore preferred to salute him as the author of Thalatta, Der Weg der Griechen zum Meer (Vienna 1947), and at the same time as our best guide to the literature of every question connected with the Homeric poems, with some reflections which have arisen in my mind in response to the question, posed by Professor L. G. Pocock of Christchurch, New Zealand: Was the author of the Odyssey ever a sea-captain?' Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
