[Original newspaper] The Sun, founded by the colorful Benjamin Henry Day, was the first penny new…spaper published in America. This issue contains a vivid detailed description of a balloon flight from Castle Garden, (Battery Park, Manhattan), to Brooklyn by Isaac Edge Jr. (1801-1859) and Guillaume Eugène Robertson (1800-1836). Edge was a well-known and accomplished pyrotechnist based in Jersey City, New Jersey where his father, Isaac Edge was a founder of the city. Police news from New York City, drunkenness, assaults, etc., one mentioning a group of "blacks" who were playing like "kittens" until a fight broke out, escaped prisoners "renegadoes" hunted down, advertising, one for John F. Thomas, a maker of artificial limbs (he was apparently an amputee himself). [Ballooning] [Prosthetics maker].

Original plain endpapers, no previous ownership details. Printed title page with a small woodcut of a coffin. By Jabez Richardson, A. M. […pseudonym of Benjamin Henry Day [d 1810-1889] ] . The Preface includes details of William Morgan and the anti-masonic affair. Pages lightly toned. Clear text throughout in double columns, with numerous small illustrations within the text. A very good copy of this scarce work.
