Le botaniste Brébisson (1798-1872) est membre fondateur de la Société française de photographie. La Nouvelle méthode photographique sur collodion, ouvrage pionnier, qui sera rapidement réimprimé en 1853, l'auteur illustre sa méthode novatrice de collodion sec instantané. Le procédé au collodion a été inventé par l'artiste et photographe anglais Frederick Scott Archer en 1851. Brébisson participe à l'Exposition universelle de Londres en 1862. Dans sa variation de la technique du collodion humide, Martin a placé un vernis protecteur transparent sur son négatif au collodion, qu'il a d'abord appliqué sur du verre, puis sur une plaque métallique vernie en noir. Il a ensuite appliqué un vernis coloré sur le négatif, ce qui a non seulement protégé l'image mais l'a également convertie chimiquement du négatif au positif.
