Imprimé à Paris par Den…ys Langlois, 1648 1 volume in-8 (18 x 11,3 cm) de 15 feuillets non chiffrés comprenant le titre, le portrait du chancelier Séguier imprimé au verso du titre, l'épître à Monseigneur Séguier, l'avis de l'imprimeur au lecteur, la table des maximes, trois poésies ; 243-(5) pages. Reliure strictement de l'époque plein maroquin rouge, dos à nerfs orné aux petits fers dorés, titre doré, plats encadrés d'un triple filet doré et d'un encadrement improprement dit "à la Du Seuil" avec fers pointillés dans les angles, roulette dorée sur les coupes, doublures de papier peigne, gardes de papier blanc, tranches dorées. Reliure d'une fraîcheur étonnante. Exemplaire sans le frontispice gravé par N. Picart. Exemplaire réglé à l'encre rouge, très frais. Edition originale rare. Jacques de Chavaille (1592-1670) a publié successivement trois volumes d' "Observations morales et politiques" appliquées à la vie des hommes de l'antiquité pour l'usage des hommes de son temps. Un premier volume a paru en 1641, un second volume a paru en 1648 (notre volume), et enfin un troisième volume a paru sous cette même date de 1648 un peu plus tard et chez un autre libraire que les deux premiers. Ce dernier volume est extrêmement rare. Les trois volumes ensemble, pas plus que les deux premiers, ne se trouvent ensemble la plupart du temps. Chaque volume est donc un ouvrage complet en lui-même ce qui explique que notre volume est titré sans tomaison, comme un ouvrage complet. Ce Livre Second contient les Observations Morales et Politiques sur les vies d'Antonius (Marc-Antoine), Artoxercès (Artaxerxés), Dion (de Syracuse), Brutus, Aratus (Aratos de Soles), Galba et Othon. L'auteur en tire des maximes telles que celles-ci : La débauche corrompt la jeunesse. Les sujets doivent secours au prince. L'ivrognerie gâte le corps et l'esprit. Un prince doit prendre garde aux actions de ses favoris. La volupté va contre le devoir. Le libertinage des soldats fait échapper la victoire. Le peuple est toujours dans la méconnaissance. Un homme habile doit pourvoir à l'avenir. Un ami se connait au besoin. Etc. Superbe exemplaire parfaitement conservé en maroquin ancien de ce livre rare.
