Parmi les apparitions de la Sainte Vierge au XXème siècle reconnues par l'Eglise, Fatima est de loin la plus célèbre. Deux papes se sont rendus en pèlerinage à Fatima : Paul VI en 1967, Jean-Paul II en 1982. Malgré cela, on peut constater que Fatima est mal connu du public catholique. L'événement et le message de Fatima revêtent pourtant une grande importance pour la vie de l'Eglise ; importance que le Cardinal Cerejeira, archevêque de Lisbonne, résumait ainsi : "Nous croyons que les apparitions de Fatima ouvrent une ère nouvelle : celle du Coeur Immaculé de Marie".
