This book was published on the occasion of an important exhibition held at Thomas Agnew & Sons Galleries in 1924 in support of the Artist's General Benevolent Institution. The catalogue to this exhibition is appended at the rear of this book. All thirty four colour reproductions are tipped in beneath individual tissue guards. This is a souvenir programme for the 19th annual conference of the Federation of Grocers' Associations, held in…Oxford between the 5th and 9th July 1909 by the Oxford and District Grocers' Association. The Grocers' Federation was started in 1891. At its 19th conference, the Federation consisted of 130 Associations, representing about 14,000 shops. In this programme is a history of Oxford, and of the Oxford and District Grocers' Association, with the names and portraits of members of the various committees. There is also a summary of the events of the conference and a couple of accounts of excursions during the conference. In the publisher's original half cloth binding. Externally smart, though a little soiled to the boards, with minor wear to the extremities and joints. Spine is slightly slanted. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Very Good. The Original Sketches of Major Light LIGHT, William] (Adelaide, SA, Australia) Bookseller Rating: : London, Rodwell & Martin, 1823, 1823.Tall well margined Quarto, unpaginated but comprising a frontispiece vignette ('Sicilian Cottage'), a…n engraved title page with a vignette ('Crater of Mount Etna'; verso blank), 60 full-page plates (versos blank), each with a leaf of descriptive text (English on one side, the French translation on the verso) and a tissue-guard, and 3 index pages. Contemporary full black morocco extensively gilt- and blind-decorated, all edges gilt; leather a little rubbed at the extremities, with minor wear to the corners; minimal foxing and some offsetting (confined mainly to the tissue-guards); an excellent copy with the ownership signatures of J. Woodhouse (Brasenose College, 1839) and E. Angas Johnson on the front endpaper. William Light (1786-1839), soldier and artist. His original sketches of Sicily were augmented by De Wint and then engraved on aquatint. with the original tissue guards, upper margin of some leaves light stains, not affecting plates, the engravings are clean and quite vivid under their original protection. Note the binding is 19th century and period, there is rubbing and chipping minor to binding and the binding is slightly cocked, else vg. Scenes from Italian life vividly drawn, gilt raised bands on spine, superb Italian stone marbled boards and endsheets period. P. De Wint and Wm. Light (illustrator).
