Paperback. Condition: New. Essays on the performance of drama from the middle ages, ranging from the well-known cycles of York to matter from Iran.Medieval English Theatre is the premier journal in early theatre studies. Its name belies its wide range of interest: it publishes articles on theatre and pageantry from across the British Isles up to the opening of the London playhouses and the suppression of the civic mystery cycles, and also includes contributions on European and Latin drama, together with analyses of modern survivals or equivalents, and of research productions of medieval plays. The articles here focus on civic theatre and display. Chester, York, Durham and Newcastle, and London. Practicalities are to the fore: what the Drawers of Dee actually did, how the actors in the York Corpus Christi Play knewwhat time it was, the difficulties presented to London pageantry by unauthorised house-extensions and horse-droppings. Even the stately entertainments of a royal tour by James VI and I featured (in Newcastle, of course) negotiationover the monopoly on coal disguised as a historical event in a play about King Alfred and Canute. Ranging further afield is an introduction to the living tradition of Iranian mystery plays, whose history and development have somethought-provoking parallels with those of medieval waggon plays in the West. Finally, the director and producer discuss their 2019 production of John Redford's Wit and Science by Edward's Boys, the first to be played by aboys' company since the sixteenth century.

Add to basketpaperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Add to basketSoft Cover. Condition: Fine. 3rd Printing. 300 pp. Text in English. The papers in this volume, which is the first published work to deal exclusively with the Bleek and Lloy L.C. Lloyd in the field of Khoisan studies in southern Africa. Wilhelm Bleek and his sister-in-law Lucy Lloyd documented the language of the |Xam Bushmen by taking down by dictation, in a phonetic script they had developed, more than 12,000 pages of folklore, accounts of daily life, and descriptions of rituals. Since the 1870s this ethnographic material has been used extensively by linguists, folklorists and archaeologists, and this book brings together researchers from these diverse but related fields. The first part of the book describes these two unusual personalities and their work, the second the research that has followed. It thus not only presents a detailed biographical account of the Bleek family's work with the /Xam informants, it also represents a contemporary position on the status of their ethnographic collection.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'I am not Shemr, this is not a dagger, nor is this Karbala,' recites the arch-antagonist as a ta?ziyeh performance begins. Verisimilitude is not the endeavour; this is a devotional offering that stirs lament for the the Shi?i martyrs by representing events crucial to sacred history. But what does that retelling entail Through study of four of its main episodes--from their long inter-female dialogues to the protagonists' encounters with jinn, dervishes, and foreigners--this book explores the ta?ziyeh repertoire's compositional features. Combining a wide range of historical scripts, largely unpublished manuscripts, with witness accounts, it tracks the tradition's development from Safavid to Qajar Iran asking, who were its contributors And, how have they left their mark.
