Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "Throughout World War II, Navy Nurses earned over three hundred military awards and honors for their efforts and care. Navy Nurses have long set the standards of care for the profession and have exhibited the highest commitment to duty and sacrifice in service of our soldiers. From the original Sacred Twenty to the four thousand or more serving today, Navy Nurses lead the way in standards of practice, carrying the banner of that proud legacy. Each of the Angels of Bataan and Corregidor shared the experience of becoming a Prisoner of War, yet no two were exactly alike. They came from diverse backgrounds, joined the Navy Nurse Corps from various parts of the country, and returned to different lives after the war. After the war some were eager to share their experiences, while others were anxious to get home and find their "new normal" life."thenThe book begins with a description of the situation that brought these women together, and follows their story through the battle that led to their imprisonment, their heroic response to the needs of their fellow POWs, and their return home. Awarded Silver Stars, their story is one of honor, duty and compassion. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Generation X is the name chosen for the cohort of individuals born between the years 1965 - 1980. Called by some the "Forgotten Generation," and the "middle child" by others, they are considered resourceful, independent, self-reliant, creators of the DIY movement, and basically anti-fads and fashion. 84 million babies were born into Generation X, with a population of 88.5 million Gen Xers in the US at the time of the 2020 Census. They saw the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the first space shuttle in 1981 and the tragic explosion of Challenger five years later. They survived two energy crises, 1970s and 1980s, all while being exhorted by the U.S. Government to "Just say NO" to illegal drug use, during the height of the War on Drugs.Profoundly affected by the 9-11 attacks, the perspective towards military service and national security among Generation X sends a message of communication and collaboration among the branches of the service, making the military more effective and efficient, even if the number of individual personnel is less.As leaders, there is a sense of pride and purpose similar to their Silent grandparents, that is a unique quality of Generation X. Heroic acts, servant leaders, and selfless determination are evident in each of the following true stories about members of Generation X. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Chinese are known for a variety of things, among them are proverbs, dumplings, chopsticks, massive armies, ancient teachings, and a Great Wall. In 1941, China became host to a group of American civilian pilots, who were also known for a variety of things, among them aviator skills beyond compare, shenanigans, handsomely decorated planes, camaraderie, and victories. The proverb above caught my attention as I was preparing information for this story. When I volunteered to write about the American Volunteer Group (AVG) Flying Tigers, I had no idea who they were, or what they accomplished so to say now that I have learned "a lot" is an understatement. I have become totally immersed in their story. With so many personalities and achievements to write about, it was a challenge to establish a starting point. I enjoyed the style and swagger that LIFE magazine was able to capture in the 1942 article about the team, and their focus was on the pilots. But the behind-the-scenes characters, the support personnel such as medics, cooks, aviation mechanics, navigators, and other team members received limited attention, so they will become the focus of this view of the Flying Tigers. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Greatest Generation is the name chosen to describe the demographic cohort born between 1901 and 1927 and becoming adults from 1919 to 1945. Many of this generation were children during the Great Depression, and teenagers or young adults during the recovery period that followed. Hardships and adversity tend to produce stronger, more resilient people and a robust, relentless military force. The impact on the military became the most evident with the United States entry into World War ll. With the Selective Service Act of 1940, men between the ages of 21 and 45 were required to register for the draft, the first peacetime draft initiated in the U.S. By the end of the war, over 45 million men had registered. Over 16 million Americans served in the armed forces during World War ll, and the majority were from this generation. As of 2024, 66,000 of the 16 million American who served in were still alive and in their late 90s or early 100s. Considered largely conservative on social and economic issues, foreign policies, moral and legal issues, most claim they continue to become more conservative as they age. With 90% of them registered to vote, their impact on society continues to be felt. Some criticize the generation for its conservatism, while others praise their sacrifices. The following stories are true accounts of the heroic actions for service members born into the Greatest Generation. This item is printed on demand.
