Depuis le voile du Temple de Jérusalem à la fois limite et lieu de révélation jusqu à l'utilisation du « rideau » par les artistes de l époque classique, la matérialité du voile ne cesse de se rencontrer et de dialoguer avec sa symbolique ; que ce soit dans la littérature patristique, dans la liturgie, dans la vie et la mise des moniales, dans l architecture et l'ornementation des édifices religieux ou encore dans le « dévoilement » cosmique d une vision du divin. Le voilement du « dieu » (ou du lieu de sa rencontre), attesté depuis la plus haute antiquité orientale, n'a cessé de se manifester tout au long de l histoire des religions, particulièrement du monothéisme.
