The aspirations of the republic in the region were driven by traders seeking opportunities in the Far East, and those who dream of competing with the British Empire, now in India, with the Mekong that would open Laos, Burma and China to French commerce. The French aspirations up the Mekong river disappointed these efforts because the Mekong was impassable by boat.
