This book explores the practice of gynecology in the 19th century, focusing on the surgical treatment of uterine displacement, especially in extreme cases. The author, a practicing gynecologist, contends that most cases of uterine displacement respond well to treatment, which in severe cases may involve substantial surgical intervention. In addition to the treatment of extreme cases, the author also goes into detail about the ancillary techniques required for the surgeon to succeed, including a discussion of the treatment of complications. The book concludes with a series of reflections on the state of gynecology, and where the author sees it going in the future, which he believed would increasingly be based on empiricism as time went on. This work is a valuable contribution to the historiography of gynecology, and to the history of 19th century medicine more generally.
