Scarce booklet documenting the construction and the inauguration of the Buchenwald Memorial. Between 1952 and 1958, the Buchenwald concentration camp site and the surrounding area were made into the GDR's first monumental presentation of a… Nazi memorial site to the victims of the Nazis. Indeed, in 1958, in the vicinity of the concentration camp's mass graves on the south slope of the Ettersberg, the GDR built a memorial complex visible far and wide. Its monumentality was intended to reflect the extent of the Nazi crimes, but it served first and foremost as a national memorial. Some of the GDR's best-known sculptors, such as Fritz Cremer, Waldemar Grzimek, Hans Kies, and René Graetz, were involved in designing this vast memorial site, and some of their work was of particular artistic merit. Fritz Cremer's presentation of a group of inmates in particular, with its psychological differentiation between the individual figures portrayed, expressing weakness, exhaustion and steadfastness that is certain of victory, remains ingrained in one's memory. Today, the "Nationale Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Buchenwald" ("National Buchenwald Memorial") is expanded to become the largest German concentration camp memorial, complete with exhibitions, an archive and a library. This work is profusely illustrated with numerous b/w photographic reproductions of the Buchenwald Memorial.
