This beautiful book amply reflects the art of the stained glass windows--recently restored in a seven-year process--in this 13th-century chapel built by King Louis IX in Paris. Plates bright and clean but some foxing throughout with a p. 39 tear repair. "Cell" design endpapers in ocean blue/white/gray/brown faded towards edges. Inside front gutter showing at top. Red/green/white "muddle" design for boards with red leather six-band quarter spine (gilt lettering and design) and corners. Front/back covers have spots, scrapes, usual shelf wear with chipping along all edges. However, holding together quite well after 140-plus years.

Half-title printed in gold, title printed in gold, red and blue; 84 pp. text within abundant decorative borders printed in blue, brown, green and red. Intial capitals nicely decorated woodcuts. And 4 pp. 'Explanation des Planches'. With 25 plates: 20 chromolithographs with ornamental details of interior and stained glass from the newly restored chapel and 5 large engraved plates, views and plans, on mounted India paper (with 1 brown spot) by Gullaume. - The plates printed on thick paper (age-toned and loose in binding, therefore outer margins plates frayed). - Lithographs in vivid colours and gold executed by Lemercier after designs by employees of Imprimerie Lithographique et Taille-Douce de Charles Cotteret. - With the technique of chromolithography in this edition the true rendering of the colours is amazing. - First edition 2000g.

Extra illustrated with 2 additional engraved plates: one frontispiece plate: "Sainte Chapelle de Paris," engraved by Leon Gaucherel; and Plate no. 59 from the *Encyclopedie d' Architecture*, depicting the "Restauration de la Sainte-Chapelle," bound in at the rear. Bound in contemporary half morocco and marbled paper over boards, marbled endpapers. Ex-library copy with spine label, bookplate, and small ink ownership stamp on the title page and plates, else very good. The color lithographs and engraved plates are bright and clean.

The author, an architect and an artist, examines the decorative details of the Chapel in a series of fine chromolithographic plates printed by Lemercier. There are also exterior and interior engraved views and plans. This is most probably the first edition. Another edition by Morel editor appeared in 1865, see Weinreb cat.New Series 5 - item 150.
