Ces volumes sont sous-titrés : Moi ! (n° 1) ; Les Autres ! (n° 2) ; Graisseur & conducteur (Suite des Autres !) (n° 3) ; Une Séance d'un comité vue et entendue par un trou de serrure (n° 4) ; Suite et fin d'une Séance d'un comité vue et entendue par un trou de serrure (n° 5) ; Un peu de tout (n° 6) ; Suite et fin d'Un peu de tout (n° 7) ; Prologue de Inspecteur et inspecté (n° 8). La Bibliothèque de Lille possède la série complète ; l'exemplaire de la BnF est incomplète des deux derniers numéros, comme ici. Cette publication, imprimée à Lille, prend la forme de lettres adressées à la Compagnie du chemin de fer du Nord, appelée Madame. L'auteur y critique sa dureté envers ses anciens employés à partir de nombreux calembours autour des chemins de fer. Avec Alexandre Desrousseaux, auteur du "Petit Quinquin", Charles Decottignies (1828-1883), chansonnier patoisant, est l'un des auteurs marquants du XIXe siècle à Lille. L'historien Pierre Pierrard leur a consacré sa thèse de doctorat (Lille et les Lillois du Second Empire, étudié sous l'?il des chansonniers patoisants, 1965). Decottignies écrivait en patois sur des airs connus. Il célébrait la vie quotidienne, l'agrandissement de Lille en 1858, les fêtes populaires (le Broquelet), les réservistes de 1867, la démolition de la "Nouvelle Aventure", la Société Sainte-Cécile, etc. Il avait été ouvrier corroyeur avant son entrée au chemin de fer du Nord comme graisseur puis conducteur. Il se fit ensuite "cabaretier par besoin" et nomma son établissement "Au Chansonnier Lillois".
