Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Paul Calle and Guy Deel (illustrator). A substantial mid-century anthology of espionage, sabotage, covert warfare, resistance operations, intelligence failures, code-breaking, and deception campaigns of the Second World War, compiled from notable historians, journalists, military officers, and firsthand participants. Contents include pieces by Walter Lord, Gordon W. Prange, Cornelius Ryan, John Gunther, Indro Montanelli, Frederic Sondern Jr., and others, covering Pearl Harbor, OSS activities, Nazi spy networks, the French underground, the Hess flight, Operation Fortitude, code books, Hiroshima, and postwar intelligence revelations. The dramatic two-color illustrations and atmospheric jacket art are highly characteristic of Reader's Digest's premium 1960s historical productions and give the volume strong visual appeal. Book condition: Very Good. Clean, square, and firmly bound with bright turquoise pictorial cloth and sharp gilt spine lettering. Interior notably clean with only light toning and a few tiny spots; no ownership inscriptions observed. Minor shelf wear and faint rubbing to extremities. Dust jacket condition: Fair to Good only. Original unclipped jacket present but heavily worn, with substantial edge tears, creasing, chipping at corners and spine ends, surface abrasions, and a large loss at the lower spine/front joint area; rear panel and flaps intact. Edition/printing points: 1964 copyright page with no later printings stated; Reader's Digest Association Pleasantville imprint; Library of Congress card number 63-22763. Paul Calle (1928-2010) was a prominent American illustrator, painter, and stamp designer best known for his association with NASA and the U.S. Postal Service. A graduate of Pratt Institute, he began his career in commercial illustration and magazine art before becoming one of the original artists selected for NASA's Art Program in 1962. Calle was the only artist granted close access to the Apollo 11 astronauts before launch, and his sketches from that mission became iconic. He designed more than forty U.S. postage stamps, including the celebrated 1969 'First Man on the Moon' stamp, and also produced respected Western and historical paintings later exhibited in major museums. Guy Deel (1933-2005) was an American illustrator and Western artist whose career bridged paperback illustration, commercial art, and large-scale mural work. Born into a West Texas ranching family, Deel became especially known during the 1950s-70s for his vivid action-oriented paintings used on Western novel covers, including work associated with authors such as Louis L'Amour. Beyond book illustration, he worked for Disney productions and painted a massive mural for the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum in Los Angeles. His strong draftsmanship and cinematic compositions made him well suited for dramatic historical anthologies like Secrets & Spies.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj) Guy Deel (illustrator). First Edition. [lovely book, tight and clean, with no discernible wear to either book or jacket]. Novel of mature romance between the title character, "a proud woman -- proud of her Yankee heritage, proud of her own feisty independence, and proud, too, that she and her small sailboat can outsail any man or woman in the coastal town of Hasty Harbor, Maine," and a retired admiral who she meets at the launching of a navy ship. Laid in is a 1990 letter from a Hollywood TV producer to actress Lee Remick, who apparently was under consideration for the leading role in a proposed adaptation; Remick died the following year, however, and to date no TV or film version of the book has been produced.
