Penned by a correspondent who spent months exploring the region, it presents a detailed account of the gold mines that sparked a widespread migration in the late 1850s. It delves into the causes of the stampede, the challenges faced by the miners, and the true extent of the region's mineral wealth. The author also provides valuable insights into the diverse climates, landscapes, and indigenous communities of British Columbia, shedding light on the region's complex history and its significance as a frontier of opportunity and adventure. Henry DeGroot was a journalist with the New York Tribune when he was sent to report on the gold discoveries in 1848. Rather than giving a personal account of his own experiences, however, DeGroot presents a very useful history of gold discoveries in California in 1848 and 1849. Other sections consider why John Fremont failed to discover gold earlier in the 1840s, and why many of the early pioneers failed to attain wealth. The illustrations are by the great Gold Rush artist, Charles Nahl. The front wrapper shows a miner panning for gold, and the rear wrapper illustrates a quartz mill. Other illustrations show Sutter's Mill and other mining camps, as well as various mining methods. Ximenes bought the Streeter copy for $50 in 1968. It is now in the DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University. KURUTZ 175. WHEAT GOLD RUSH 56. STREETER SALE 2985. HOWES D220 (ref). COWAN, p.162. ROCQ 15772. NORRIS CATALOGUE 948. Original pictorial wrappers. Wrappers lightly worn and lightly soiled. Two brief notes on verso of front wrapper (one in pencil, one in ink). Very clean internally. About very good overall.
