Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dj. First American Edition. [minimal shelfwear to book, a nice clean copy; the jacket is lightly soiled, with a few teensy chips along the top edge of the front panel, light age-toning to spine and along edges of flaps]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To Bill Allyn -- / with love but no money! / Paul Dehn / Hollywood, 1964." "Divertissements of wicked wit and delicious wisdom" by this British screenwriter and film critic, who writes on many topics, a lot of them showbiz-related. "He serves us wine a la Madison Avenue, tosses up a brilliant riposte to Miss Nancy Mitford's examination of women of a certain class, provides a rare and meaty examination of Shakespeare as prepared by Olivier and Brando . takes us to the movies for a clarification of the Monroe Doctrine, and tops it all with a dessert of Queen Bee, Joan Crawford." The jacket copy also notes, with refreshing modesty, that "he also has a Hollywood Oscar for a recent film" (this would be SEVEN DAYS TO NOON, for which he shared the Best Story Academy Award with his longtime partner James Bernard). He would go on to write (usually in collaboration) films such as GOLDFINGER, THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, several of the original PLANET OF THE APES sequels, and (his last credit, a solo effort) MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (1974). Signed by Author.

Condition: Very Good. One-page TLS (4 Mar. 1955) on blue note paper: typed in black, featuring Dehn's 19, Bramerton Street, Chelsea letterhead in blue, and signed in blue pen. Single fold, some creasing, echo of a paperclip, identified as 'Paul Dehn' in pencil by Crosland. Very good. A gentle and tongue-in-cheek TLS, from Paul Dehn, the Oscar-winning British screenwriter and MI6 spymaster, to the literary biographer and translator, Margaret Crosland: after referring to his employer (perhaps the BBC or the News Chronicle, for which he was film critic?) as "dear wooly-headed creatures, who did your Cocteau book so little justice" he sends himself up with: "(You had better burn this letter before it falls into their hands and I am sued by the lot of them"), and closes, "Love, Paul". A multitalented writer (of poetry, criticism, libretti and screenplays), Dehn (19121976) is best remembered for his film writing, including Goldfinger (1964, as co-author), The Spy who Came in from the Cold (1966), three of the Planet of the Apes films (1969, 1971, 1972), and "most notably Murder on the Orient Express (1974). This last received an Oscar nomination, and Agatha Christie declared that it was the best film adaptation of any of her books." (ODNB). From Margaret Crosland's archive. Crosland (1920-2017) was an important and prolific British literary biographer and translator of French and Italian authors, "who pioneered Cocteau" in Britain (Owen, 2009). She was the French literature consultant for the British publisher Peter Owen, who issued many of her biographies and translations, and thus she played a crucial role in introducing French authors, such as Jean Cocteau and Colette, as well as the Marquis de Sade, Apollinaire and Anaïs Nin, to mid-century British audiences. Owen observed that Crosland was "very important in advising us on books to publish. It was Margaret who pioneered Cocteau [. and] led us to Dalí, as she knew his novel Hidden Faces" (ibid). Her biographical subjects included both Colette and Jean Cocteau (titles much under discussion in her archive), Simone de Beauvoir, Raymond Radiguet and Edith Piaf, and she translated works by writers including Sade, Emile Zola, Edmond de Goncourt and Cesare Pavese, as well as Colette and Cocteau. She was also a voluminous correspondent, literary broker and networker, as her letters evidence in rich and fascinating detail. Peter Owen (2009) Interview with Steven Fowler, Vice Magazine.
