Le comte Dejean (Amiens, 1780 - Paris, 1845) réussit à la charnière du XVIIIe et du XIXe siècle à être un général participant à toutes les grandes batailles de l'Empire, y compris Waterloo, et aussi un entomologiste renommé, spécialiste des coléoptères. Il constitua une collection de coléoptères unique en Europe, récoltés au cours de ses campagnes en Espagne, au Portugal, en Russie, en Allemagne et ensuite pendant son exil (1815-1818) dans les provinces autrichiennes de Carinthie, de Carniole, de Croatie et de Dalmatie. Notre exemplaire, rare, est son catalogue final, le plus complet, avant la dispersion de sa collection, qui dénombre 22 399 espèces identifiées. Il a été publié en cinq livraisons de juillet 1836 à mai 1837. Il s'articule autour de cinq grandes sections : les pentamères, les hétéromères, les tétramères, les trimères et les dimères. Le catalogue de Dejean fait date, car il intègre de nombreuses espèces nouvelles, mais a suscité de nombreux débats en s'écartant de la nomenclature traditionnelle. Après avoir dispersé sa collection exceptionnelle, il présida la Société entomologique de France en 1840.
