Sp. backstrip missing, paper cover over signatures present. Frt. bd. detached , but present. Rear bd. attached. F.e.p. loose. Text block tight. Interior leaves age-toned w/ scattered fx-ing. All folded diagrams and plans appear present, mostly unopened. An official report to the 35th Congress (1857-1859) under the authority of Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War. The Delafield commission was sent to Europe to document the latest developments in military tactics, engineering and technology. The commissions assignment was achieved by the richly detailed reports and illustrations. There is a great deal of technical information on the use of fortifications and artillery during the Crimean War (1853-1856). The reports of the three commisioners, Major Delafield, Major Albert Mordecai and Captain George McClellan were issued separaely.This is the report covers advances in military engineering, logistics, ordinance, etc. The fine lithographic plates in this edition reach the level of art. A good reading copy. Extra postage due.

With a color lithographic title page, numerous folded maps and plates, and several black & white and color-tinted lithographic plates (some folded). Bound in original publisher's brown cloth over boards, stamped in blind. Ownership signature of "W. G. Verplanck" in ink on the front free endpaper and in pencil on the title page. Lacking the spine back, the back cover is detached, the first three folded maps are partly damaged and detached with intermittent tears, else good overall. The Verplanck family has a notable history in New York dating back to the colonial period: several Verplancks participated in the development of the business and banking industry in New York City and were among the Trustees of Kings College, now Columbia University.

Doc. 2d session, 36th Congress. 277 pages followed by 79 maps and lithographs and diagrams (hand numbered by the previous owner, and with a printed index of each, set inside. Forts around Lyon, Theatre of War in Crimea, Powder Magazine at Stettin, French Cavalry Barracks, Prussian Gun Carriages, etc., etc., 13 in color. Binding tight. Clean throughout. The pamphlet lists the rankings of each class when looking at the 3rd class of 1860, George A. Custer of Ohio is ranked last. The pamphlet lists academic staff who went on to significance in the Civil War including Godfrey Weitzel, John M. Schofield, Oliver O. Howard, and William J. Hardy. WorldCat shows only one library holding this pamphlet. Covers lightly soiled and red tape along the spine. A fine Custer collectible. GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER (1839-1876). Custer was a nineteenth-century American Army General who died in the Battle of Little Bighorn, sometimes referred to as "Custer's Last Stand.".
